Severe weather impacted Kentucky Power’s service area from late last night through this afternoon, bringing high winds and heavy rain. There were 16,400 customers without power at the peak of the storm.
The National Weather Service reported peak gusts of up to 64 mph in Pike County and 46 mph in Letcher County. Sustained winds of 30–40 mph impacted several counties throughout the day causing additional outages across the system.
Summary
There are approximately 3,300 customers without power. The majority of customers affected are located in Pike County (1,458) and Letcher County (809) where winds were the strongest.
Crews responded immediately to begin assessing damage and have been able to restore nearly 80% of outages by mid-afternoon. They will continue working to restore power as safely and quickly as possible through tonight.
Restoration Efforts
More than 500 Kentucky Power personnel and business partners have been working to restore power today with 89 more crew members coming from out-of-state to assist. Significant damages have been reported across our service area, including 26 broken cross arms, 13 damaged cutouts, 19 broken poles, 152 spans of downed wire and 11 damaged transformers.
Estimated Restoration Times
More than 40% of outages have been assessed. Restorations for customers in Ashland and Paintsville should be complete tonight. All other areas impacted by the windstorm event are expected to be fully restored by tomorrow night. Power outages that occurred outside of the weather event window will have different estimated restoration times.

Safety Messages
- Be aware of the potential for trees and overhanging limbs to fall without warning. The melted snow from early this week and last night’s heavy rains have made the ground soggy which means trees can fall more easily, especially when wind is involved.
