SWEPCO Restoring Power Following Severe Weather I Update #5

Update: 5/1/2024 9:59 AM CT

What You Need to Know:

  • More than 95 percent of all SWEPCO customers had power restored late Tuesday night following a severe weather outbreak Sunday that included multiple confirmed tornadoes.

  • At peak, approximately 61,000 SWEPCO customers were without power. As of Wednesday, at 9:00 a.m., power was restored to 58,408.

  • SWEPCO mobilized 1,200 utility professionals, including lineworkers and tree crews from Alabama, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky and Georgia to help our communities get power back as safely and as quickly as possible.

  • Now is the time to prepare for the next extreme weather event: Weather reports show potential for another line of unstable and severe weather to arrive in the ArkLaTex beginning late Thursday and into the weekend.

CURRENT SITUATION:
With far-reaching damage from tornado-producing storms that passed through the region late Sunday, more than 1,200 utility professionals from six states mobilized to safely restore power to approximately 61,000 customers.

Storm damage included impacts to both transmission and distribution systems that impacted customers across three states. Crews worked diligently, using resources in the air, on the ground and on water to complete the work safely.

Based on the number of outages and crews available, we develop a Global Estimated Time of Restoration or ETR, which is an estimate of how long it will take to restore 95% of all customers affected.

The more damage there is to the system, the further out in time the global ETR will be.

Latest restoration times include the following:

  • Shreveport, La. – 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 1

As work progresses, additional updates will be forthcoming.

THE TIME TO PREPARE FOR THE NEXT STORM IS NOW:
Storm season is underway and brings extra dangers. The time to prepare for the next storm is now.

Forecasts show the potential for additional storms in the ArkLaTex later this week through the weekend.

With the potential for more extreme weather, now is the time to develop a plan for you and your family. Consider what you’ll do if there’s an extended power outage. Be sure to contact family, friends, neighbors with young children, the elderly or people with medical conditions to ensure they also have a plan. If you or a family member relies on uninterrupted electric service for health reasons, make a plan now in case there are extended outages.

Remember:

  • Have an adequate supply of needed medications.
  • If utilizing life-saving medical equipment, ensure necessary supplies are on hand for an extended period.
  • If your medical equipment relies on electricity, seek alternative housing or shelter.

STORM DEBRIS REMOVAL: Our tree crews are often among the first responders following severe weather. They must work as quickly and safely as possible to clear trees and limbs from our power lines and equipment to allow crews to restore power.

During storm restoration, property owners are responsible for removing tree debris. For any tree removal that does not involve our lines or equipment, call a local landscape or tree contractor.

As a reminder: Don’t attempt to remove tree limbs or debris yourself if it is within 10 feet of a power line.

If you notice downed lines or sparking equipment, stay far away and call us at 1.888.218.3919. Discover More Details for After The Storm
