11/25: Preparing for Strong Wind and Snow

Update: 11/25/2025 4:52 PM ET

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) is monitoring forecasts and preparing for potential inclement weather through the holiday weekend.
  • Strong wind gusts of 45-50 mph are expected Wednesday across I&M’s service area with accumulating snowfall expected in southwest Michigan and north-central Indiana.
  • I&M is prepared to safely and quickly respond if outages occur in our communities.
  • We understand our customers rely on us to power their everyday lives, and this is especially important at the holidays. That’s why we’ve been working to improve reliability and reduce outages throughout our service territory by replacing aging poles and power lines, using smart meter data to identify potential issues, and trimming trees and branches that can cause damage to power lines.
  • I&M customers are encouraged to prepare ahead of the potential weather. Make sure phones are charged and batteries, water and medications are on hand.
  • Customers should connect with I&M and download the I&M app to report outages and monitor their account - IndianaMichiganPower.com/App and enroll in text and email alerts at IndianaMichiganPower.com/Alerts.

SAFETY TIPS

  • Downed power lines. Stay away from any downed wires and report them to I&M with a phone call to 1-800-311-4634 or to your local police department.
  • Be careful around debris and fences. Fallen limbs, snow accumulations and other debris can hide downed power lines, and a downed line may be contacting a fence out of line of sight. Trees covered in ice and snow could fall or drop limbs at any moment, please look up.
  • We urge the general public not to approach our crews. For your safety and ours, please do not approach I&M employees and contractors working to restore power.
  • When using a generator, connect all appliances directly to the generator. Don’t connect the generator's electrical output to any home or building electrical circuits. Don’t use gas-powered generators in enclosed or partially enclosed spaces, like inside a garage or a home.
  • Use space heaters and electric blankets safely. Never leave a space heater or electric blanket unattended. Turn it off when you’re not home or if you’re sleeping. Do not use a heater or electric blanket if wires are frayed or damaged.
