Winter Storm Fern Update

Winter Storm Fern is actively impacting Kentucky Power’s service territory and will continue through Sunday with changing conditions throughout the day, including periods of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain. There are currently no outages to report. Temperatures will continue to drop through Sunday night, which will allow precipitation to change back to all snow creating additional hazardous conditions.

Current forecast for Kentucky Power’s service area:

  • Ashland area: Snow is expected Sunday with periods of freezing rain and sleet possible. Temperatures will remain near freezing. Light ice accumulation of less than 0.1 inch is possible along with 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet.
  • Hazard area: Freezing rain is expected Sunday morning before transitioning to rain by late morning. High around 40 degrees. Ice accumulation of 0.1 to 0.2 inches is possible.
  • Pikeville area: Rain or freezing rain is expected early Sunday before transitioning to all rain after 8 a.m. Highs in the upper 30s. Light ice accumulation of less than 0.1 inch is possible.

Kentucky Power is responding with approximately 900 utility professionals, including line and forestry crews with more crews arriving tomorrow.

Crews, contractors and business partners are staged across our service area and prepared to respond as outages occur. In addition, our teams coordinate closely with local and state officials as part of the shared community response effort.

What Customers Can Do Now

  • Stay off the roads: Please avoid unnecessary travel as snow and ice begin accumulating. Clear roads help first responders and our crews access work sites safely and restore power faster.

  • Stay informed: Download the Kentucky Power app to report outages and stay in the loop on outages in your area. Please be aware that outage notification delays should be expected due to the unsafe road conditions expected to worsen throughout the night.
