Situation

Appalachian Power (APCo) expects to restore power to the majority of customers by 11 p.m. tonight (Dec. 20) following Friday’s heavy rain and strong winds. At the storm’s peak about 52,000 customers were without power. APCo crews and mutual assistance personnel are working safely and quickly to restore service to the remaining customers.

Outages

As of 4 p.m., about 150 APCo customers in Virginia and 5,700 in West Virginia remain without power. Approximately 200 locations require repairs to safely restore service.

Restoration Estimates

West Virginia repairs are more complex and require multiple crews and specialized equipment, which may result in longer restoration times.

Storm Response Efforts

• Assessment is 99% complete; crews have found 44 broken utility poles, 14 damaged transformers and 250 spans of downed wire.
• Crews are working in hazardous areas with fallen trees and large limbs.
• Mutual assistance crews from surrounding states are supporting restoration efforts.

• Weather remains favorable for power restoration work.

• All downed lines are dangerous — they carry an electric current that can cause serious or even fatal injuries. Stay away to stay alive. If you encounter a fallen wire, keep yourself and others away from it and anything it may be touching, and call 911 and APCo at 1-800-956-4237 immediately.
• If you use a portable or RV generator, do not plug it into your circuit breaker box.
