Severe Weather Restoration Update

Update: 8/17/2026 10:00 AM ET

Summary

Just days after completing an extended restoration effort from severe storms that began last Tuesday, Kentucky Power crews are responding to another round of severe weather that moved through the service area beginning late Sunday afternoon.

Heavy rain and strong winds caused widespread outages, with more than 10,700 customers without power at the peak. As of 10 a.m., approximately 7,800 customers remain without power.

Approximately 900 Kentucky Power employees, business partners and mutual assistance personnel are supporting the response, including additional mutual assistance crews traveling to the service area today.

Weather

Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms remain possible through this evening. The strongest storms could produce damaging winds, while additional heavy rainfall on already saturated ground creates an increased risk for flash flooding.

A Flood Watch remains in effect across eastern Kentucky through this evening. Additional thunderstorms are possible later this week, creating the potential for new outages as restoration work progresses.

Restoration

Damage assessment and restoration work are underway across the service area. Crews are identifying damaged equipment, making repairs and determining the work necessary to restore customers as safely and quickly as possible.

Flooding is an issue in some areas that could prevent crews from safely reaching some damaged equipment and outage locations. In those areas, assessment and restoration work will move forward as soon as floodwaters recede and conditions allow safe access.

Estimated restoration times will be established and updated as damage assessments progress and crews determine the extent of repairs needed.
