Severe Weather and Restoration Update

Update: 8/14/2026 10:00 AM ET

Summary

Since Tuesday’s initial storm, a stalled weather front has produced rounds of severe storms, resulting in additional outages each day. Forecasts indicate these conditions are expected to persist through the weekend.

Power has been restored to more than 96% of customers affected by storms earlier this week. Approximately 4,000 customers are currently without power across Kentucky Power’s service area. Crews are working to complete repairs from earlier storms while responding to new outages caused by subsequent rounds of severe weather.

Nearly 1,000 Kentucky Power employees, business partners and mutual assistance personnel remain deployed across the service area to support restoration and respond to additional damage.

Weather

The active weather pattern is expected to continue through the weekend, bringing additional heavy rain and the potential for severe thunderstorms across eastern Kentucky.

Scattered severe storms are expected this afternoon and evening with wind gusts of up to 60 mph and flash flooding possible. After repeated rounds of heavy rain this week, extremely saturated ground is an additional concern. Even lower wind speeds could bring down trees and limbs, potentially causing additional outages.

Another round of more organized severe weather could move through the region Saturday afternoon and evening. The timing and strength of Saturday’s storms remain uncertain, and unsettled weather with additional severe storms possible is expected to continue Sunday.

Response Efforts

Crews remain positioned throughout the service area and will continue working today to restore customers affected by this week’s storms. As repairs are completed, resources are being directed to locations where work remains while crews also respond to new outages as they occur.

With additional storms expected, Kentucky Power will continue monitoring conditions and adjusting resources based on weather, damage and outage conditions. Restoration work will continue as long as conditions allow crews to work safely.

Preparing for Additional Storms

  • Customers are encouraged to prepare now for the possibility of additional outages through the weekend.
  • Charge phones and other devices, keep flashlights and batteries readily available and make plans for medical equipment or other needs that depend on electricity.
  • During severe weather, stay indoors and away from windows. Stay away from downed power lines and anything they may be touching, including standing water.
  • Never walk or drive through floodwater.
  • Additional safety information is available at KentuckyPower.com/Safety.
