Kentucky Power Thunderstorm Restoration Update

Update: 8/12/2026 10:00 AM ET

Current Situation

Severe storms with wind speeds up to 51 mph in some areas impacted Kentucky Power’s service territory yesterday afternoon and into the night causing power outages for 19,291 customers at the peak of the event. Crews went right to work to begin restoration. Currently there are 14,579 customers without power.

Weather

Multiple storm systems will move across eastern Kentucky today and tonight. Heavy rainfall may result in scattered instances of flash flooding, especially in areas that are hit with repeated rounds of storms. As storms advance east, broken to solid lines of severe storms are likely to develop, bringing the potential for wind gusts of 60-70 mph. These factors could lead to additional utility problems, especially in heavily forested and saturated areas.

Storm Response and ETRs

Kentucky Power has more than 700 employees, business partners and contractors working to restore power to customers. Additional mutual assistance crews will continue arriving to support restoration efforts as needed to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

Estimated Times of Restoration (ETRs) are available on the Outage Map. Field crews will continue to update these times as new updates become available. All ETRs are reported from employees in the field, which means near real-time updates about restoration times.
