7-27 10p: Working Through The Night

Update: 7/27/2026 10:06 PM ET

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Severe storms with high winds swept through I&M’s service area from Southwest Michigan through East-Central Indiana.
  • Crews are seeing heavy tree damage, downed wires and broken poles, which led to about 17,200 customers without power at peak.
  • We expect to have most customers in Muncie restored by 12:00 p.m. tomorrow and most customers in Marion, Jonesboro and Sweetser restored by 6:00 p.m. tomorrow.
  • Approximately 500 personnel are dedicated to getting the lights back on.
  • Crews working through the night are focused on clearing trees, responding to downed wires, assessing damage and restoring power where possible.

SITUATION

Crews have restored nearly 8,000 customers. Approximately 9,400 customers are without power as of 10:00 p.m. due to the storms, down from a peak of about 17,200. Most outages have been in the hard-hit Marion, Sweetser and Jonesboro areas.

Our teams will continue working overnight to respond to hazards. Tree crews are clearing the way for lineworkers, assessors are identifying damage and repair needs, and lineworkers are making repairs to restore service where possible.

We expect to have most customers in Muncie restored by 12:00 p.m. tomorrow and most in Marion, Jonesboro and Sweetser restored by 6:00 p.m. tomorrow.

Thank you for your patience and trust as we work around the clock to restore power.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Stay Away from Downed Lines: All downed lines should be considered energized and deadly. The power line and anything it could touch, including fences, storm debris, and standing water, can carry electric current that could cause serious or fatal injuries. If you see a fallen wire, keep yourself and others (including pets) away and call local police or I&M immediately at 1-800-311-4634.
  • Take It Slow on the Road: Drivers should reduce speed and be on the lookout for utility personnel, emergency responders, and tree removal crews working in the area.
  • Check for Local Cooling Centers: Some communities set up cooling centers for people to escape the heat. Check with your local city or county.
